Godzilla

With only one other feature film to his name has Gareth Edwards managed to successfully reawaken Godzilla after his ten year hiatus? In two words: Hell yes! Gareth Edward's take on Godzilla not only respects the original 1954 masterpiece but elevates the monster to new heights.

Godzilla is a fantastic film for the monster movie genre blending both an incredibly emotional human story with awe-inspiring monster battles. The acting is mostly great with Bryan Cranston being the stand out bringing a gut punching performance but sadly he does not have a lot of screen time. For most of the film we are following Aaron Taylor-Johnson who for the most part is likeable but falls a bit flat and I would of liked to of seen a little more emotion out of him. Ken Watanabe is wonderful as always as the monster expert and Elizabeth Olsen brings a great emotional performance as Aaron Taylor-Johnson's wife. Overall the human element isn't perfect but is a great way to get the story moving and held my interest the whole way through.

The monsters are definitely the highlight of the film with the new Godzilla design being absolutely breathtaking. Every time Godzilla appears on screen its hard not to feel a sense of awe and amazement as you see Godzilla's personality shine through with the stunning and incredibly detailed visuals. Gareth Edwards has done an amazing job at portraying Godzilla as both the saviour of humanity and the destroyer of cities. Godzilla's rivals, the M.U.T.Os, are also very well designed and have a very unique look to them. The final battle sequence is one of pure exhilaration as I felt my inner child come through as I witnessed this colossal fight to the death.

Gareth Edwards has clearly proven his talent as a director with Godzilla in creating a truly epic experience. Alexandre Desplat's haunting score fits perfectly in the film and creates some very suspenseful moments similar to the likes of Jaws. Overall Gareth Edwards has successfully resurrected the King of the Monsters with a film that deserves the title of Godzilla.
